The Rugby World Cup 2027 is heading to Australia — and with just over a year until the tournament kicks off, the conversation about contenders, dark horses and England’s prospects is already well underway. Here is everything you need to know about RWC 2027.

Where and When Is RWC 2027?

Australia will host the Rugby World Cup 2027, marking the second time the tournament has been held Down Under following the successful 1987 and 2003 editions. Matches will be played across multiple Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, with the final expected to be held at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

The tournament runs from September to November 2027, following the same September–October window used in 2019 and 2023.

The Favourites

New Zealand — All Blacks

New Zealand remain the benchmark in world rugby. Four World Cup titles — more than any other nation — and a consistent ability to produce world-class players across all positions. Their 2027 campaign will be shaped by how effectively they can rebuild after 2023 and which of the next generation of All Blacks emerges as genuine Test-level players over the next 18 months.

South Africa — Springboks

The defending champions after 2019 and 2023, South Africa arrive in Australia with the target on their back. Back-to-back World Cup wins are rare — only New Zealand have done it — but the Springboks’ power, set piece dominance and defensive organisation make them dangerous in any knockout format.

France — Les Bleus

France’s 2026 Six Nations title adds further momentum to what is one of the most exciting periods in French rugby history. A home World Cup in 2023 where they were quarter-final hosts, a new generation of outstanding players and the financial depth of the Top 14 — France are genuine World Cup contenders for the first time in years.

Ireland

Ireland have been the world’s top-ranked team at various points in recent seasons and a World Cup victory would complete a remarkable transformation of the programme. Their ability to translate Six Nations form into World Cup success remains the key question — they have reached the quarter-finals in recent tournaments without the knockout-stage breakthrough their domestic form deserves.

England’s World Cup Prospects

England’s 2026 Six Nations campaign raised questions that the coaching staff will need to answer before 2027 arrives. The talent is there — individual quality across the squad is not the issue. Building a consistent game plan and the mental fortitude to perform in knockout rugby over a six-week tournament is the challenge that England need to solve.

History offers encouragement — England won the World Cup in 2003, reached the final in 2019, and have the resources and rugby infrastructure to compete with any nation. The 18 months between now and the tournament start represent a critical window.

Australia as Hosts

Home advantage has historically been a factor in World Cup rugby. Australia won the tournament on home soil in 1987 (as co-hosts) and reached the final in 2003. The Australian Wallabies have been rebuilding under new leadership and a home World Cup provides a significant motivational boost and a favourable draw structure.

Australian crowds — passionate, rugby-literate and used to supporting their national team — will make the venues electric in the knockout stages, particularly if the Wallabies progress deep into the tournament.
