Match day kit in rugby is more regulated than most sports. Referees can — and do — inspect players’ kit before a match, and items that don’t comply with World Rugby laws must be removed. This guide covers exactly what you need to wear, what the rules allow, and how to make sure you’re match-ready.
The Match Day Kit List
- Match shirt — in your club or team colours
- Match shorts — usually matching or coordinated with the shirt
- Rugby socks — long socks, typically knee-high
- Rugby boots — correct stud type for the pitch surface
- Mouthguard — mandatory at most levels
- Underwear / base layer — optional but must be a single colour
What the Laws Say
Shirts
Match shirts must not have any external buckles, zips, D-rings or any element that could injure another player. They should be tucked in where possible. No pockets on match shirts.
Shorts
Shorts must not have external pockets or buckles. If you wear compression shorts underneath, they must be the same colour as the outer shorts or a single plain colour.
Socks
Socks must be long enough to cover any shin guards worn. Most clubs have specific sock colours to match the team kit — check with your club.
Jewellery
No jewellery is permitted. Rings, earrings, chains and bracelets must be removed before the match. Items that cannot be removed should be covered with soft tape. Referees will check.
Studs
All studs must comply with World Rugby regulations. They must be circular in cross-section with no sharp edges. Referees inspect studs — worn or damaged studs will mean being asked to change boots.
Base Layers & Undershorts
Base layers worn under match shirts are allowed — they must be a single plain colour. Compression shorts worn under match shorts must be the same colour as the shorts or plain.
Protective Equipment
All protective equipment (headguards, shoulder pads, body armour) must carry a World Rugby approved mark. Referees can check this. Hard or rigid protection is not permitted.
Match Day Shirt Recommendations
Canterbury Club Vapodri Match Jersey
The most widely worn match shirt at UK club level. Lightweight, moisture-wicking and built for contact — the Vapodri fabric is noticeably better than budget alternatives in wet conditions. Available in a wide range of colours to match club kits.
Price range: £30–£50
Match Day Shorts Recommendations
Canterbury Club Short
Durable, comfortable and available in the standard colours used by most UK clubs. The Canterbury Club Short is the default match day short at amateur level — good fit, quick-drying and holds up to a full season of washing and contact.
Price range: £18–£28
Match Day Socks
Canterbury Club Sock
Long rugby socks in a range of colours. Canterbury’s club socks are well-made, stay up during play and come in multipacks. A practical purchase for regular players who go through socks quickly.
Match Day Boots
Choose your stud type based on the pitch condition:
- Moulded FG — firm or dry pitches, or any artificial surface
- Screw-in SG (metal studs) — soft, wet or muddy pitches typical of winter rugby
Carrying a spare set of studs or a second pair of boots in your kit bag is worth doing through winter — pitch conditions can be unpredictable.
