Premiership Rugby

Premiership Rugby Explained – Format, History & Most Successful Teams

Premiership Rugby is the top division of professional rugby union in England. Featuring some of the biggest clubs in the country, it is one of the most competitive domestic leagues in the world.

Here’s everything you need to know about how the competition works, its history, and the most successful teams.

What Is Premiership Rugby?

Premiership Rugby is England’s elite professional rugby union league.

  • Founded in 1987 (as Courage League)
  • Fully professional since 1996
  • 10 teams currently compete
  • Season runs from autumn to late spring

The winner is crowned English Champions.

How Does the Premiership Rugby Format Work?

Regular Season

  • Each team plays every other team home and away
  • Teams earn league points:
    • 4 points for a win
    • 2 points for a draw
    • 0 points for a loss
    • 1 bonus point for scoring 4+ tries
    • 1 bonus point for losing by 7 points or fewer

The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.

Playoffs

  • 1st vs 4th (Semi-final)
  • 2nd vs 3rd (Semi-final)
  • Winners meet in the Premiership Final at Twickenham

The playoff winner becomes Premiership Champion.

Relegation

Depending on league regulations for the season, the bottom team may face relegation to the RFU Championship (second tier), subject to eligibility criteria.

Most Successful Premiership Teams (All-Time Titles)

Here are the clubs with the most Premiership titles:

1️⃣ Leicester Tigers – 11 titles
2️⃣ Bath Rugby – 7 titles
3️⃣ Saracens – 6 titles
4️⃣ Wasps RFC – 6 titles
5️⃣ Harlequins – 2 titles
6️⃣ Northampton Saints – 2 titles
7️⃣ Exeter Chiefs – 2 titles
8️⃣ Sale Sharks – 1 title

Leicester Tigers remain the most decorated club in Premiership history.

🏆 Recent Premiership Rugby Winners

Recent champions include:

  • 2024/25 – Bath Rugby
  • 2023/24 – Northampton Saints
  • 2022/23 – Saracens
  • 2021/22 – Leicester Tigers
  • 2020/21 – Harlequins
  • 2019/20 – Exeter Chiefs

The competition has become increasingly competitive, with multiple clubs capable of winning the title.

European Qualification

Top Premiership teams qualify for the European Rugby Champions Cup, Europe’s elite club tournament.

This adds extra importance to league finishing positions.

Salary Cap & Squad Structure

Premiership Rugby operates under a salary cap system designed to:

  • Promote financial sustainability
  • Maintain competitive balance
  • Prevent overspending

Clubs must manage squad depth carefully, especially during international windows.

Why Premiership Rugby Is So Competitive

  • High physical intensity
  • Tactical variety
  • Strong academy systems
  • International-level players
  • Playoff drama

Unlike some leagues where the regular-season winner is champion, the playoff system creates unpredictable finals.

The Premiership Final

The season culminates at Twickenham Stadium in London — English rugby’s iconic venue.

Winning the final is considered one of the highest achievements in English domestic rugby.

Simple Summary

Premiership Rugby is England’s top professional rugby competition. Teams compete in a regular season followed by playoffs, with Leicester Tigers the most successful club in history. The league combines physical intensity, tactical depth, and high-stakes knockout rugby.
